An aviation electronics technician works specifically with electronic aircraft equipment to maintain and repair an aircraft’s electronic systems. You may troubleshoot, install, and test equipment, in addition to performing scheduled repairs and maintenance work. The systems you will work with include but are not limited to navigation systems, autopilot and gyroscopes, radio, drones, and radar.
Aviation electronics technicians will want to have a comprehensive knowledge of FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations, troubleshooting, electrical theory, and the tools used on the job, along with the equipment being worked on.
How to Become an Aviation Electronics Technician
To become an aviation electronics technician, you will first need to meet the following requirements:
- Be of at least 18 years of age
- Be able to speak and understand English
If you meet these qualifications, there are a few ways to become an aviation electronics technician. You may choose to earn a certificate and degree in the field of avionics, which can take between 12 to 18 months. It is important to note, these programs must be completed at an FAA accredited institution.
If you do not choose schooling, you can still enter the field with practical experience. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, you can enter the field with a specified amount of practical experience ranging from 18 to 30 months. In addition to these hours, refresher courses are offered to help prepare you for any needed exams to earn your FAA certification. You will need to be certified by the FAA to become a technician.
Salary and Job Outlook for Aviation Technicians
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2023, aviation electronics technicians earned an average of $77,080, with the top 10 percent of technicians making $107,370 or more. By 2032, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that demand for aviation electronics technicians will increase 4 percent, which is about as fast as the national average. This increase is projected to add 12,800 job openings for avionics technicians each year nationwide.
