While many electrical schools use a combination of classroom and online instruction, there are currently no electrician certificate or diploma programs offered entirely online. This is due to the fact that electricians typically work as apprentices for four years. During each of those years, the apprentice electricians are required to complete 2,000 hours of on-the-job training to learn how to operate equipment and install electrical systems which is something that can not be done online.
Those not enrolled in an apprenticeship program may find online electrical training courses that would cover some of the same material found in the apprenticeship program. Courses include the National Electric Code, electrical formulas, blueprint reading, drafting, workplace safety and building codes. There are also continuing education courses available online for experienced electricians.
