A 'Day In The Life' Of An Electrical Systems Technician

These days, the demand for electrical systems technicians is high. Cable companies, auto diagnostic shops, factories, and numerous other types of businesses rely on experienced and knowledgeable electrical systems technicians to keep their equipment up and running.

If you're considering a career in STEM as an electrical systems technician, there are some things you may want to know before you enroll in a formal training program.

Electrical Systems Tech Responsibilities

Typical job responsibilities for an electrical systems technician can vary greatly depending on the specific industry in which you're working.

There are a number of industries that employ electrical systems technicians, including:

  • Security
  • Automotive
  • Construction
  • Real estate
  • Cable/internet

In general, however, most technicians have some basic responsibilities on a daily basis, including troubleshooting electrical and mechanical failures in equipment, installing and wiring new electrical equipment, and maintaining existing electrical equipment and relevant components.

Types of Roles

On any given day, you may perform a number of important jobs. For example, if you are working for a security company, you may be responsible for installing a new electronic communications system, such as a security system in a home or place of business.

Later in the day, you may be called out to troubleshoot a malfunctioning security system; this could include performing tests to ensure the circuitry of the system is functioning properly, along with replacing any necessary parts.

You are also responsible for conducting routine and preventative maintenance on varying security systems.

Work Environment

The work environment for an electrical systems technician can vary greatly depending on the employer.

There are also many electrical systems technicians who choose to work as independent contractors, which is a great option if you want a little more freedom. Independent contractors set their own schedule, choose the projects they want to take on, and essentially work as their own boss.

The Right Fit

How can you determine whether or not a career as an electrical systems technician is really right for you? For starters, consider your specific skills. The most successful electrical systems technicians tend to have excellent technical skills, mathematical abilities, and communication techniques. Depending on your employer, you may also be required to have some basic computer skills and knowledge.

Essentially, if you have the above skills (or can learn them), along with a genuine interest in electrical circuits and their components, then this could be a great career option for you. You'll just need to be determined and self-disciplined enough to complete this technical training.

Electrical Technology Employment

Due to the fact that the demand for knowledgeable electrical systems technicians doesn't appear to be waning anytime soon, this can really be a great career option if you enjoy working with others and putting technical knowledge to good use at the very same time.

The average pay for an electrical engineering technician in 2023 was $74,440 according to bls.gov.  An associate degree in electronics may help you in a competitive market. Find an electrical school near you to get started.
